Ragged CULT Introducing ~ Saskia Puxley

Camberwell College of Arts student Saskia is no stranger to the world of art; Her iconic flicks has gained her a substantial following. We managed to interrupt her busy schedule for a catch up; see what she has to say below.

Tell us a bit about yourself? 

“I was born in London but moved to Lewes, a small town outside Brighton when I was 6. I started revisiting London at 15 whilst going to school in Lewes and then college in Brighton. I now live in South London and go to Camberwell College of Arts. I’m interested in art, photography and general street culture. Photography is definitely my hobby.”

Have you always been a creative?

“Yes I’ve always been creative.”

When did you realise you could draw/were good at art?

“I realised I could draw and paint from a really young age because my mum is a really great artist and introduced me to it. I have a very artistic family so I have always been surrounded by it.”

How did you get into photography?

“Started when I was younger doing photoshoots with my girlfriends from school, and then I realised how much I enjoyed it which lead me to taking photography at A level and it went from there.”

Where would you say you get your inspiration for?

“Documentary film and photography, London,  and my environment.”

What’s it like studying at Camberwell College of Arts & what are you studying there?

“Really great; I find it very enriching to be in a studio with so many other inspiring artists. My tutors are also really helpful and supportive. I am doing a BA Hons in Fine Art & Painting, but have been considering focusing more on my photography lately.”

Have you got any favourite artists or photographers that influence you?

Ewen Spencer, Boogie, Josh Cole, George Shaw,Renaissance artists e.g. Rembrandt.”

What type of style is your photography?

“I would say I do street photography and portraiture. I am much more interested in subject matter than the technical side to photography.”

You’ve recently put some of your photography on tshirts, would you ever consider having a clothing line incorporating your art and photography?

“Yes, I definitely would.”

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

“I hope to be able to make my photography and art my profession for life!”

Do you have any advice for any aspiring photographers and artists? 

Invest more in experiences and less in equipment. Practice your craft and everything will fall into place! I think it’s really important to find the medium that expresses your creativity best.”

I can tell already Saskia is destined for great things. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of her photographs/artwork in exhibitions and in fashion shows in the near future. Check out her photography below.
